The Pioneer of the Ruin Bar Movement
Szimpla Kert is not merely a bar; it is a monument to urban regeneration and artistic spontaneity. Established originally on Kertész utca in 2002 before moving to its current location on Kazinczy utca in 2004, Szimpla converted an abandoned factory housing complex into an bohemian wonderland.
Architecture & Artistic Layout
Spanning two floors with an open central courtyard, Szimpla Kert features dozens of interconnected rooms, each with a unique artistic identity. Visitors will discover a cut-open vintage East German Trabant car transformed into seating, old television sets showing static art, laboratory glassware serving draft beer, and hundreds of mismatched retro chairs.
During daylight hours, Szimpla serves as a neighborhood community center. Every Sunday morning, the venue transforms into the famous Szimpla Farmers Market, offering locally produced artisan cheeses, cured meats, honey, and fresh pastries produced by Hungarian rural artisans.
Live Music, Cinema & Cultural Initiatives
Szimpla functions as a major cultural incubator in Budapest. It features regular indie film screenings, live jazz and folk performances, open jam sessions, and charity flea markets. It maintains its independence without corporate brand domination, retaining its original gritty soul.
